The president of the National Union of Students has said it will “chase down” any Liberal Democrats voting for the £9,000 cap in university tuition fees announced by the coalition government.

Aaron Porter called the proposal “utterly unacceptable” from a party that pledged to abolish such fees and a betrayal in the interest of a small number of elite universities rather than students.

Under the plans, universities will be able to charge £6,000 with a higher tier of £9,000 – nearly treble existing levels – if they promote access for poorer students.
